Calcasieu Renovation & Restoration
2008 San Antonio, Texas
The Calcasieu was constructed in 1914 as an office retail space designed by noted San Antonio architect Atlee B. Ayres. A major renovation in the 1940’s converted the second through fifth floors of the six story building to apartments. Apartments on the fifth floor did not have private baths. Most of the apartments were very small efficiency type units, and the upper floors had been vacant for approximately five years.
The building's facade was returned to the original conditions from 1914, determined from historical photos and on-site analysis. With the exception of the first floor lobby, the interior of the building is of a plain utilitarian construction. All interior partitions and doors were removed to achieve rentable apartment units meeting current building and fire codes. Our office also prepared Parts I & II of the National Park Service Historic Preservation Certificate and the submittal to the City of San Antonio for designated landmark status.
