Brooks Hangar 9 Assessment

2009     San Antonio, Texas

The assessment of the historic wooden hangar from the early 1900s on Brooks City Base, formerly Brooks Air Force Base, provides a survey and analysis of existing architectural and engineering needs, opinion of probable cost, and documentation of the existing hangar.

Hangar 9 is the lone survivor of 16 similar wooden structures erected at Brooks Field in early 1918, and is the Nation's oldest Air Force aircraft storage and repair facility.  Saved from demolition in the 1960s, the hangar currently houses a museum dedicated to Brooks Air Force Base aviation history.  The wood trussed, white-painted, frame structure symbolizes both early Army efforts to create an effective air arm and the rapid progress made toward that goal under the impetus of war.
