A mere few months after its groundbreaking in December 1917, the iconic Hangar 9 at Brooks Field in San Antonio stood tall as the last remaining all-wood frame hangar from the World War I era, earning a prestigious National Historic Landmark designation. However, years of neglect following the closure of Brooks AFB took a toll, necessitating significant restoration efforts when the City of San Antonio established the Brooks Development Authority to revitalize the campus. By 2015, Debra J. Dockery, Architect, P.C. spearheaded a meticulous assessment, developing restoration drawings to reinforce the structure, replace rotted wood siding, install new interior concrete slabs, and upgrade electrical and fire suppression systems - all while navigating approvals from the State Historical Preservation Office. The culmination was the rebirth of Hangar 9 as a community event center, respectfully preserved yet adapted with restrooms, catering infrastructure, and full ADA accessibility, breathing new life into this iconic piece of San Antonio's military heritage as a versatile gathering space for the modern era.
